UTTAR BANGA BANDH OBSERVED PEACHFULLY

Siliguri, Feb 12 : A 24-hour North Bengal bandh, called by 'Bangla O Banglabhasa Bachao Committee' (BBBC), a non-political organisation, affected life partially today.
Public and private vehicles stayed off the roads in Siliguri subdivision of Darjeeling district while a few shops and business establishments remained closed. The bandh also had partial impact in Dooars and other places under Jalpaiguri district. No untoward incident was reported from anywhere, police said.
The bandh was called to protest the violence unleashed by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) in the region.
''We have called this bandh in protest against the GJM's atrocities against the adivasis, police and innocent people. Our aim is also to spread awareness among people,'' president of the Bangla Bachao Committee Mukunda Majumdar said.
Terming the demand for a separate state as ''absolutely irrational'', the committee called for deployment of Army or paramilitary forces in the region to restore peace.Public and private vehicles stayed off the roads in Siliguri subdivision of Darjeeling district while a few shops and business establishments remained closed.
